Community Who Cares: Best Buddies
Best Buddies International is a nonprofit organization working to make the world more inclusive for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).
Founded in 1989 by Anthony K. Shriver, Best Buddies aims to help people with disabilities build lasting friendships, gain leadership skills, find meaningful jobs, and live independently. Their mission is simple: create a world where everyone, regardless of ability, can live a full and fulfilling life. In King of Prussia, the local chapter of Best Buddies is doing amazing work to promote inclusion and support individuals with IDD.
At the heart of Best Buddies is a commitment to inclusion. Through their core programs, they help break down social barriers and create opportunities for individuals with disabilities to thrive. One of their most powerful programs is the Friendship Program, which pairs individuals with and without disabilities to form genuine, lasting relationships. These friendships are built through shared activities, conversations and fun experiences that help people understand and appreciate each other’s differences. In their 88 chapters across eastern Pennsylvania, it’s all about creating connections that matter and fostering a sense of belonging.
Another key part of Best Buddies’ work is their Leadership Development Program. This program empowers individuals with IDD to take on leadership roles and build their confidence. By encouraging people to advocate for themselves and others, Best Buddies helps participants develop skills that enable them to lead with pride.
The Jobs Program is another important piece of the puzzle. Best Buddies works with local businesses to connect individuals with IDD to jobs that offer real opportunities. These jobs are in inclusive, supportive workplaces where individuals are valued for their skills and abilities. Best Buddies helps people find meaningful employment, which boosts their independence and sense of purpose.
Finally, the Living Program fosters an integrated experience for people with and without IDD to become active, contributing citizens who live independently in a dynamic environment where they can learn, grow, and thrive. In Pennsylvania, they offer this program at Penn State.
Best Buddies in King of Prussia is truly making a difference. Through their commitment to friendship, leadership and employment, they’re helping people with intellectual and developmental disabilities lead fuller, more independent lives. Their work is creating a more inclusive community where everyone, no matter their ability, has the opportunity to thrive.
