KOP Insiders: Ryan Gannon, MD from Blue Ocean Health DPC
KOP Insiders delves into the stories of the people who make King of Prussia one of Pennsylvania’s most dynamic live-work-play-stay destinations.
In depth interviews provide insight into the companies that make up our diverse business community and put a face to the individuals behind the business. In this edition, we are joined by Ryan Gannon, Medical Doctor at Blue Ocean Health.
Tell us a little bit about yourself, your background, and what led to you opening Blue Ocean Health.
My name is Dr. Ryan Gannon and I’m a board-certified family medicine physician. I met my current partner, Dr. Matt Kavalek, at New York Medical College. While in school, we saw that patients weren’t satisfied with their current medical care and that providers were burnt out. We discussed getting out of the medical field, but fortunately, we found a group of doctors practicing Direct Primary Care. Direct Primary Care is when there is a direct relationship between the doctors and patients, there is no auxiliary staff. There is a monthly subscription fee for unlimited access to care. It’s a similar style to concierge medicine but it’s made to be much more affordable for the average person.
Overall, we saw that the happiest group of doctors were practicing phenomenal primary care this way. Both Dr. Kavalek and I decided we wanted to pursue this type of practice as it aligned with our values. We want to provide care to the entire patient, not just a number, body part or disease. Our goal is to provide patients with the highest quality medical care a physician can provide, which includes having direct communication with our patients. They have our mobile numbers and when they call, we are the ones that answer the phone. We trained at Chestnut Hill Family Medicine and directly out of training we started our practice in Jenkintown and then relocated to King of Prussia in early July.
Why did you choose to locate your practice in King of Prussia?
In my experience, everyone has hardships with access to medical care. They are either unable to reach their doctor or have a long wait time. When they do finally reach their doctor, they receive an appointment that may not be for weeks or months. We saw a huge need in King of Prussia for a primary care location. KOP’s community is fantastic. It’s up and coming, the business community is thriving, and families are relocating here. It’s also in a great central location where we can reach people from both the city and the suburbs.
How do you feel King of Prussia affects your business?
The biggest thing I’ve noticed is the KOP community cares about their health. One of the most difficult but probably the most important things we do as physicians is educate people on the importance of their health. I’ve found that in the KOP community, that’s on the forefront of everyone’s minds. People are actively seeking alternative models of care to fit their needs. They’re educating themselves and seeking the best in their health goals.
What are some of your favorite things to do in KOP?
I enjoy networking and getting to know the local businesses. I am a member of PWRBLD Gym because powerlifting is a big hobby of mine. My girlfriend works for CHOP, and I did a lot of my training through CHOP so I am big in that community as well. I enjoy going out, visiting local farmers markets, hiking and getting to meet other members of the community.
What advice would you give to someone thinking about moving their company to KOP?
King of Prussia is a thriving community. A lot of people, families, and businesses are looking to move out of the city but want to have the best of both worlds. KOP has fun things to do with a city-like feel, but at the same time, it has options for things that wouldn’t be available in the city like hiking. Everyone seems to be really friendly and shares a sense of community.

I’m a firm believer in that health is a top priority and carries over into all areas of life. When someone’s health is not in line or the best it can be, it tends to affect numerous aspects of their life. With our unique model and approach to primary care, we’re here to help individuals and families in KOP accomplish their health goals. We can be visited at our website where we answer common questions regarding direct primary care in our FAQ section as well as blog about various topics in primary care.
