These boots were made for walking–and looking uniquely YOU while doing it. Today, Dr. Martens is a shoe brand known for celebrating self-expression and individual style and providing durability and comfort. However, the company really started back in 1945, when a German army doctor with an injured foot, Dr. Klaus Maertens, partnered with a mechanical engineer to design a comfortable work boot. By 1959, they were a growing business and started advertising internationally. A shoe company in England picked up the shoe and made some key changes, like the iconic yellow stitch that is still used today. By the 60’s, what started as a work boot evolved into a fashion trend, largely thanks to the punk, goth and grunge music scenes, symbolizing rebellious attitudes and festival culture. Currently, Dr. Martens sells a whole line of shoes, as well as clothing, shoe care products and bags.
