A KOP Insider Exclusive with Julie Lane, Chief Human Resources Officer at Orion
Orion recently chose King of Prussia as the new home for its Philadelphia-area operations, marking a new chapter for a company with deep roots in the region.
As a technology and solutions provider serving the wealth management industry, Orion helps financial advisors work more efficiently so they can spend more time helping their clients reach their financial goals.
“Our job is to create a community that allows advisors and investors to thrive,” says Julie Lane, Chief Human Resources Officer at Orion. “At the end of the day, what we do is help those individuals help everyday people.”
That people-first philosophy played a significant role in Orion’s recent decision to relocate its Philadelphia-area office after more than 20 years in Berwyn. As CHRO, in addition to her role as HR leader, Lane oversees real estate and facilities across the United States and helped lead the search for the company’s new home.
“King of Prussia almost immediately was at the top of the list for a lot of reasons,” Lane says.
One of the biggest was accessibility. Located at the intersection of major highways and regional transportation routes, King of Prussia offered an easier commute for employees while remaining convenient for clients and prospects.
“The infrastructure, the ease of getting in and out of the city, matters for commuters,” Lane says. “It’s easy for our team, our clients and our prospects to find us.”
But Orion was also looking for something its previous location lacked: a stronger sense of community.
“We were really looking for a little bit of a community feel,” Lane explains. “We felt like we were sort of isolated where we had been before. There weren’t many of the amenities that our team was seeking .”
King of Prussia’s restaurants, shopping, services and other amenities offer a rounded experience, which was particularly important for Orion’s hybrid workforce.
“We are in a hybrid environment, and so for us, the few days a week that our team members are in the office, thatmatters,” Lane says.
The location also strengthens Orion’s ability to attract talent throughout the Philadelphia region. Convenient connections between the city and suburbs allow the company to reach a broad pool of prospective employees.
The move gave Orion an opportunity to rethink its workplace, too. Rather than recreate its previous office, the company designed the new space around collaboration, connection and flexibility, incorporating phone rooms, huddle spaces, an open kitchen and gathering area, and enough room to bring the entire team together.
“We designed the space specifically for that,” Lane says. “We hosted the entire office as part of moving in events and it was all in one space; something we could not do before.”
Natural light and an open layout were also intentional, creating a workplace that feels more connected and inviting.
For Lane, those details are all part of creating a culture where people want to spend time together.
“The vast majority of our day is spent with people we work with she says. “You’ve got to be intentional about making that experience positive.”
King of Prussia has also given Orion employees opportunities to connect with the surrounding community. Lane particularly enjoys Valley Forge National Historical Park, where she and members of the Orion team have participated in walking tours.
“We get a handful of us together, and you just go outside and decompress a little bit,” she says.
Ultimately, the decision for Orion came down to accessibility, amenities, talent and quality of life—and King of Prussia checked all the boxes.
But the move represents more than a change of address. The company intentionally chose a location and workplace that could support its people, culture and continued growth in the Philadelphia market.
“We oversized it intentionally so that we had room for growth,” Lane says. “We are very committed to that talent market.”
For a company whose mission is ultimately about helping people thrive, King of Prussia offered a location where Orion’s own people could do the same.
