A KOP Insiders Exclusive at Valley Forge Park Alliance with Molly Duffy
The Valley Forge Park Alliance plays a critical, if often behind-the-scenes, role in shaping one of the region’s most treasured places.
“The Valley Forge Park Alliance is the philanthropic partner of Valley Forge National Historical Park,” says Executive Director Molly Duffy. “We are the citizen stewards of the park… working to protect it, advocate for it and work hand in hand with the federal government to care for the land and welcome visitors.
That role has deep roots. Originally founded in 1976 as the Friends of Valley Forge, the organization traces its mission even further back to early preservation efforts led by Civil War nurse Anna Morris Holstein, who rallied to save George Washington’s Headquarters at a time when it was at risk of being lost. “It started with just a couple acres,” Duffy explains. “Today it’s 3,500 acres—and it’s people who have made that possible every step of the way.”
As the nation marks the 250th anniversary of its founding, Valley Forge is stepping into a unique moment. While nearby Philadelphia will serve as the centerpiece of the celebration, the park is carving out its own role. “We’re using the idea of ‘Retreat to Valley Forge,’” Duffy explains. “Philadelphia is where independence was declared—but Valley Forge is where the Army was forged.”

This July 4th also marks the 50th anniversary of Valley Forge’s designation as a national park, offering another meaningful moment to bring people together. The celebration will be more understated, but still rooted in community, with live readings of the Declaration of Independence and performances of the national anthem. “It’s a little more low-key, but still a gathering place for people from near and far,” she says.
Looking ahead, the Alliance is entering a new phase of growth and visibility. The adaptive reuse of the Maurice Stephens House will establish a physical presence within the park for the first time, creating a new hub for engagement and programming. “It’s really a capacity-building move,” Duffy says. “It allows us to do more for the park, and for the people who love it.”
But perhaps most importantly, it’s about deepening engagement.

“The park already gets millions of visitors,” she says. “It’s not about more people—it’s about helping the people who are here feel connected and giving them a way to be part of the park’s future. We’re optimistic… even in a challenging time for national parks, people are stepping up in new ways. And we’re expanding, so we can do more, and ensure this park is here for another 250 years.”
