A KOP Insiders Exclusive with Vytas Masalaitis, Executive Director and Park Ranger at McKaig Nature Education Center
McKaig Nature Education Center sits on 95 acres in Upper Merion Township, offering more than three miles of trails, streams and old-growth forest just minutes from King of Prussia Town Center.
For Executive Director and Park Ranger Vytas Masalaitis, McKaig has been part of his life for nearly as long as he can remember.
“My family moved here when I was four years old,” Masalaitis says. “We were one property away from the park, so we were very close by for many years.”
Masalaitis first became involved in the community as a volunteer with the ambulance and fire department before joining McKaig over 25 years ago. His involvement eventually grew into his current role as Executive Director and Park Ranger. McKaig operates as part of the larger Upper Merion Park & Historic Foundation, which supports the preservation of and fosters appreciation for the township’s natural, historic and cultural resources.
Much of Masalaitis’ work involves organizing educational programs, coordinating volunteers, maintaining trails, fundraising and working with community partners. But when he gets out into the woods, it is easy to understand why McKaig has remained such an important part of his life.
“You have no choice but to take in the nature because there’s nothing else around,” he says. “It’s nice to have an organization that is very active in supporting nature and making sure that we try to make our environment the best it can be. The park gives people a place of solace to come out and go for a walk, removed from all the sounds and hustle and bustle of everyday life.”
McKaig offers something surprisingly difficult to find in such a highly developed area: a genuine sense of being in nature.
“People can’t comprehend that a half a mile away is the King of Prussia Mall,” Masalaitis says. “And then just a half mile the other way, you have this old-growth forest that takes you back hundreds of years.”
That proximity is part of McKaig’s appeal. Visitors do not have to drive an hour into the countryside to experience nature. They can find it right here in Upper Merion.

Education is central to McKaig’s mission, with programs that introduce children and adults to the natural world through hands-on experiences. Popular events include full moon hikes, bat-viewing programs, tree identification and forest programs, meteor shower viewings and seasonal events. The park also works with Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts on badge programs, Gold Award projects and Eagle Scout projects.
“We have a very wide variety of different programs that we do, nature or history oriented, because that’s our mission,” Masalaitis says. “But we’re always willing to work with anybody for really any kind of an experience out in the woods.”
That includes local businesses and organizations. Groups can come to McKaig for service projects, tree planting, guided hikes or team-building activities. For businesses in King of Prussia, it offers a chance to step outside the office and experience a part of the community that is easy to overlook.
“Everybody’s in their cubicle, sitting at their desk in front of their screens,” Masalaitis says. “It’s really nice to get out to the woods where you shut those screens off and just get away from it all.”
For first-time visitors, exploring McKaig does not have to be intimidating. The trails are well marked and mapped, and a simple out-and-back hike along the Cadet Trail provides an approximately 1.2-mile introduction to the park.
“What we’d love is to have people come out and experience is the peace and tranquility,” Masalaitis says. “Whether it’s family time, with friends or just out on your own, it’s important to be able to recharge and get your head clear.”
After decades of personal connection to the area, Masalaitis has seen firsthand how much Upper Merion and King of Prussia have evolved. Yet McKaig remains a place where people can experience something that feels untouched.
Just a few minutes away, you can leave King of Prussia behind without ever really leaving.
