Upper Merion Township Transportation Authority Awarded $1,000 EFLAP Grant to Fund Valley Forge Gateway Trail Design
KING OF PRUSSIA, PA (March 13, 2026) – Upper Merion Township is the recipient of a $1,000,000 federal grant to construct a portion of the Valley Forge Gateway Trail, a multi-use trail connecting the Schuylkill River Trail (SRT), Valley Forge National Historic Park (VFNHP) trails, and the Chester Valley Trail (CVT). This announcement comes after additional funding being acquired by the King of Prussia District, including $148,375 from the Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) Greenways, Trails & Recreation Program for design costs, and $326,900 from the William Penn Foundation to create the “Valley Forge Gateway Trail Partnership”. The Upper Merion Transportation Authority received $500,000 in DCED Local Share Account for trail construction.
The EFLAP funds will go directly to the construction of Segment 3 of the trail, which spans 0.3 miles, and will connect Segment 2 (located within VFNHP) to the intersection of North Gulph Road, First Avenue, and State Route 422/Ramp KL primarily using PennDOT right-of-way. Additional improvements will be made to the intersection, including ADA curb ramps, sidewalk updates, and signal updates.
“Construction of Segment 3 of the Valley Forge Gateway Trail will address a crucial disconnect between Valley Forge National Historic Park and residential, entertainment and retail destinations within King of Prussia, creating a safer way for residents, employees, and visitors to enjoy all the benefits our community has to offer,” said Tina Garzillo, Chair of the Upper Merion Board of Supervisors.
