Community Who Cares: King of Prussia Volunteer Fire Company
When the call comes in, the volunteers of the King of Prussia Volunteer Fire Company don’t wait to be asked twice.
That commitment is the focus of this installment of Community Who Cares, a King of Prussia District series spotlighting the organizations and people making the area a better place to live and work.
The company has been answering that call since 1950. It was born out of necessity, when a grocery store on Dekalb Pike near Gulph Road caught fire that spring. The other volunteer companies in Upper Merion Township (UMT) were held up by a freight train crossing the road. Neighbors decided King of Prussia needed its own fire company, and a group of charter members made it happen. The volunteers went on to build their station on Allendale Road themselves.
Today that same all-volunteer spirit powers a busy operation. The company runs out of two stations, one on Allendale Road and one on West Beidler Road, and its mission is to provide emergency response to the people who live in, work in and visit UMT. In 2025 alone, the company responded to 5,549 incidents, including 1,797 fire calls and 3,752 EMS calls. For a township bustling with shoppers, office workers and visitors every day, that kind of readiness matters.
The volunteers hold themselves to a high standard. According to the company’s filings, in 2000 it became the first all-volunteer fire company accredited by the Commission on Fire Service Accreditation. It has also been recognized for meeting or exceeding national training standards and for its fire and life safety programming, and in 2011 it joined two other fire companies to form a regional rescue task force.
Some of the most valuable work happens before anyone calls 911. The company offers free smoke alarms to residents and runs fire safety awareness programs for the community. Because it is all volunteer, it is also always looking for new members. Anyone interested in joining can fill out the consolidated application that all three Upper Merion volunteer fire companies share. Details are at kpvfc.com or by calling 610-265-1063.
During First Responder’s Appreciation Week, October 26 to 30, on behalf of our sponsors, King of Prussia District serves free meals to all of UMT’s first responders, including those at the King of Prussia Volunteer Fire Company, at the fire station on Allendale Road. It is one small way to thank everyone who gives their time, training and energy to keep this community safe.
