Community Who Cares: Breakthrough T1D

Community Who Cares is an ongoing series spotlighting the organizations doing good work right here in King of Prussia, many of which you might drive past every day without realizing the impact they have on our community. This time, that spotlight lands on Breakthrough T1D’s Greater Delaware Valley Chapter.

Headquartered on Croton Road, Breakthrough T1D is focused on something most of us never think about until it touches our own family: a future without Type 1 diabetes.

The chapter serves families across Eastern Pennsylvania, Southern New Jersey and Delaware, but its home base is right here in King of Prussia. From this office, a small team coordinates research fundraising, family support programs and advocacy work that reaches thousands of people living with T1D.

The chapter’s calendar tells the story of what that support looks like day to day. Later this month, families will gather at Lums Pond in Bear, Delaware for the Breakthrough T1D Summer Series, an outdoor picnic built for people managing T1D to trade notes and let their kids just be kids for an afternoon. Virtual meet-ups run throughout the fall for parents, caregivers and adults navigating a T1D diagnosis, and the chapter’s Kidz Krew gives younger children their own space to connect with peers who understand what a continuous glucose monitor alarm going off in the middle of class feels like.

For families who are newly diagnosed, the chapter’s Bag of Hope program provides a starting point: practical supplies and guidance handed to parents in the disorienting first days after a diagnosis, when the learning curve is steepest and the fear is loudest. Teen Packs and Adult Packs extend that same support to older kids and grown-ups adjusting to a lifetime of insulin math.

The chapter also fuels Breakthrough T1D’s national research push through local fundraising, including the My Ride program, which lets supporters set their own pace and distance rather than committing to a single organized event. Every dollar raised in King of Prussia joins a larger effort aimed at better treatments and, eventually, a cure.

None of it runs on autopilot. Behind the events and the programs is a small office quietly doing the work of keeping a regional nonprofit running: answering phones, training youth ambassadors headed to Washington D.C. to testify before Congress and making sure a family who just heard the words “Type 1 diabetes” for the first time has somewhere to turn.
