Community Who Cares: Laurel House

In the heart of Montgomery County, Laurel House stands as a beacon of hope for individuals affected by domestic violence.
Established in 1980 by the Women’s Center of Montgomery County, this organization has grown from a single shelter into a comprehensive agency offering a multitude of services aimed at empowering and supporting survivors.
Laurel House’s mission is twofold: to advocate for and empower those impacted by domestic violence through crisis intervention, safe haven, supportive programs and resources; and to advance social change through preventative education, community training and collaboration, fostering a coordinated response to domestic abuse. Their services encompass emergency shelter, a 24-hour hotline, counseling, legal advocacy and transitional housing, among others.
In 2006, recognizing the need for sustainable funding and community engagement, Laurel House opened Marian’s Attic, an upscale boutique-style thrift shop located at 139 E. Dekalb Pike in King of Prussia. Named in honor of longtime supporter Marian Kimmel, the store offers a wide selection of clothing, jewelry, accessories and small household items. Beyond generating revenue to support Laurel House’s programs, Marian’s Attic also serves as a safe space where victims can learn about available services in a more approachable atmosphere. Additionally, clients have access to donated items at no cost through a shopping voucher program, addressing immediate needs for essentials often left behind when fleeing abusive situations.
The impact of Laurel House and Marian’s Attic in the King of Prussia community is profound. By providing a welcoming environment for both shoppers and those seeking assistance, they foster a community that is informed, compassionate and proactive in addressing domestic violence. The success of Marian’s Attic led to the opening of a second thrift shop, Laurel’s Loft in Lansdale, further expanding their reach and resources.
Through unwavering dedication and innovative initiatives like Marian’s Attic, Laurel House continues to rebuild lives and restore hope, embodying the true spirit of a community that cares.
